West Edmonton Mall covers a gross area of about 5,300,000 sq. ft. There are over 800 stores and services including nine attractions, two hotels, and over 100 dining venues within the complex. The mall receives about 32 million visitors per year, attracting between 90,000 and 200,000 shoppers per day depending on the day and season.

Purpose

Customers and employees were having a difficult time understanding the pages, staff also faced challenges getting paging to work. Therefore, the systems in place had to be updated to ensure clear and intelligible communications throughout the mall for staff and visitors alike.

Challenge

The original speakers were installed approximately 13 feet off of the ground and roughly 30 feet apart, making the sound system unintelligible in certain parts of the mall due to dead spots between speakers.

Solution

TOA’s PC series of ceiling speakers are unique because they provide wide dispersion making sound more intelligible to a broader area. Nearly 800 speakers were replaced throughout the mall in the hallways and common areas. Each speaker had to be positioned in a new location within the ceiling because the speakers did not fit into the existing backcans. Installation took several months to complete.
