The Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal is an approximately 57-acre major transportation facility in Delta, British Columbia. Located at the southwestern end of an approximately 3 km long man-made causeway that juts out into the Strait of Georgia off the mainland at Tsawwassen, and is less than approximately 500 m from the Canada–United States border. The terminal is also the largest ferry terminal in all of North America.

Purpose

The goal of this installation project was to improve the quality of the communications and the audio overall, reduce reverberation (echo), and improve clarity.

Challenge

With such a vast space to cover, the main challenge the team over at Tsawwassen was facing for this installation was finding a system to cover such an expansive space, whilst also being fully integrated, reliable, and easy to use by the employees.

Solution

TOA and the integrator decided on installing over 100 TOA SC series horns for total coverage in the terminal and chose the N-8000 IP intercom system to provide the security and access control the terminal requested. The entire system was powered by several TOA 900 series amplifiers and mixers that were strategically placed throughout the facility.

Feedback

The result of this TOA upgrade has provided the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal with clear and intelligible sound, and as an added benefit many residents close to the terminal are relieved that they no longer hear the Tsawwassen Terminal's paging at their homes!
