Nestled within Southern Ontario, east of Ajax and west of Oshawa, Whitby is a town in Durham Region located on the north shore of Lake Ontario. It is also called home by its population of 128,377 residents, and is the headquarters of Durham Region.
The Whitby Town Council Chamber meetings require a formal meeting room with a conference system that packs an intelligible audio punch. Their conference system had to be portable, confidential, and intelligible while fitting the ever-changing demands of the room.
There were several challenges interlaced in upgrading the Town of Whitby’s 35-year-old Council Chambers, such as the new system was required to be able to be automated, with portable conferencing, complete with intelligible sound, projectors, USB-based presentations, and Rogers TV Broadcasting Equipment. The new equipment also had to be easily integrated for seamless operation. The town appointed Duocom Canada to recommend, provide, and install a reliable conference system for a meeting room with inter-changeable layout requirements.
Members selected TOA’s TS-900 Series Infrared Wireless Conference System because of the system's portability, privacy, and intelligibility. TOA’s TS-900 system features Infrared Wireless technology for confidentiality, cordless chairman, and delegate units, making the system easy to relocate and expandable. Each unit features an infrared microphone and a monitor speaker, user control of the microphone, and voting capabilities. TOA’s TS-900 Series has the capability of being monitored by Creston control panels, which the Town of Whitby has been using. Crestron’s control panel allows the chairperson to be able to fully control all conferencing functions, including microphone functions such as mute on/off. The Town of Whitby can also expand the system to include voting (which is currently not being used). The conference system integrates nicely with the other products selected to work within the council chambers.
Despite the requirements and challenges, the installation was a complete success. The Council Chambers enjoys using this conference system, with a member stating to TOA that they specifically appreciate how "It is easy for us to operate and re-locate the units as we require.”
