The Hospital for Sick Children, founded in 1875, is a major paediatric hospital and teaching hospital located on University Avenue in Toronto, Ontario. It is affiliated with the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine.

Purpose

The Sick Kids pharmacy on the 11th floor needed to secure their pharmacy entrance with a reliable and ease to use intercom system that can be hands-free. This is to reduce the possibility of illness by continuous touching of the door stations.

Challenge

This pharmacy is a restricted area and can only be accessed by a pharmacy staff member and key administrators. The pharmacy is a clean room, meaning everyone and everything used at the location must be as clean as possible and free of illness. With cleanliness being of such importance, facilitators needed to find an intercom solution that included a front door station to enter the pharmacy that can abide by their cleanliness policy, whilst maintaining the space's accessibility and functionality.

Solution

The N-8033MS intercom door station was installed throughout the restricted pharmacy area to answer the front entrance and communicate internally. This provided hands-free conversation and could be connected to a foot switch or another external switch from the external dial input terminal which permits one-touch dialling operation by way of such switches. In conjunction with the N-8050DS door station and N-8000 IP intercom exchange, the system created a communication gateway while meeting the clean room requirements.

Feedback

Facilitators at Sick Kids were very pleased with the system. Even stating that they have hopes to develop further projects with TOA in the future.
