Located in the heart of Midland, Ontario, the Bourgeois Community Centre (Midland Arena) is a fully accessible, 118,000 sq. ft. multi‑use facility featuring two NHL‑sized ice surfaces, a double gymnasium, event spaces, and the Midland Sports Hall of Fame. As a central hub for sports, recreation, and community events, the facility requires dependable, high‑intelligibility audio systems to support a wide range of activities.

Purpose

This project involved the upgrade of the audio system in the second ice arena, building on the success of the first arena, which was equipped with a TOA system back in 2014. The goal was to provide clear announcements and reliable sound coverage tailored to the unique acoustic environment of the second rink.

Challenges

The second arena presented a completely different acoustic profile compared to the existing rink, while high ceilings and reflective ice surfaces introduced reverberation and echo challenges—which is commonplace in arena projects—existing system design from the first arena could not be directly replicated.

Solution

The solution involved selecting components specifically suited to the acoustic characteristics of the second arena. Weatherproof speakers and distributed audio components were strategically placed to improve speech intelligibility and ensure even sound coverage across seating and rink areas.
The system was engineered to provide consistent, high‑clarity announcements for games, practices, and events, while integrating smoothly into the facility’s existing infrastructure. This tailored approach ensured optimal performance despite the differing conditions between the two arenas.

Feedback

The completed system has been well received, with the arena expressing strong satisfaction with the improved audio clarity and overall performance in the upgraded arena.
