The Gordie Howe Sports Complex, named after legendary hockey superstar Gordie Howe, is a vast area of sports facilities both indoor and outdoor. Its is a hub for the city of Saskatoon with nearly 70,000 players coaches, officials and volunteers participating annually and over 100, 000 spectators annually for all events

Purpose

The facility wanted to upgrade the outdoor audio system and add a new system to a new section of the building and renovated areas. Better sound required for sporting events.

Challenges

Being an outdoor venue, designing a sound system that correctly directed audio to cover as much area as possible. Allocating the speakers location throughout the fields, to deliver intelligible messages in outdoor environment.

Solution

TOA needed to work closely with the on-site installer who did a great job on the set up and positioning of all the equipment. TOA recommended the M-864/DPSP3 for digital signaling processing to produce better sound quality and intelligibility, a DA-500 to power the system including Pro HX-5 compact arrays speakers and F-2000 wide dispersion speakers. Our high end 5000 series microphone was used for speech and vocal performance.

Feedback

The results were exceptional, with tonnes of power and outstanding coverage for all in attendance to hear. They were very happy with the audio system design.

The HX-5 is an innovative modular speaker design that incorporates the best characteristics of the traditional, cumbersome woofer enclosure combined with a CD horn-loaded high frequency driver and the full-range compact speaker enclosure without the drawbacks associated with each type. the HX-5 features remarkably easy to control coverage characteristics including problematic low frequencies and can be installed in a multitude of ways while maintaining a modern, unobtrusive appearance. a system is configured by four preassembled modules with four IF drivers and twelve HF dome tweeters. This configuration allows the variable directivity control and low-frequency dispersion control comparable to use a large constant directivity horn speaker. a choice of 4 directivity angles (15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees) can be employed as needed.
