Education

École Halifax Peninsula is a brand new construction project in Halifax that will support the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial. This brand-new school is designed to accommodate students from pre-primary to grade 8. The project includes both the school and an attached community centre, serving up to 700 students.

Purpose

Once home to the Halifax RCMP headquarters, this land was acquired by the Nova Scotia Government to help address the shortage of French-language schools on the Halifax Peninsula. The new École Halifax Peninsula will provide much-needed educational space for Francophone students and a dedicated hub for the Acadian community. This project was geared around a multi-system sound solution including TOA for paging and integration within the school’s intercom.

Challenge

While the project progressed smoothly overall, a key challenge was ensuring that the audio system met the specific performance standards of the new school. By working closely with consultants from the early design phase, TOA Canada was able to tailor its solutions to match the detailed specifications and deliver reliable, high-quality sound coverage throughout the school and community centre.

Solution

To meet the diverse audio needs of the new École Halifax Peninsula, TOA Canada provided a comprehensive solution tailored to each space. IR-800 Kits deliver effective classroom voice lift, ensuring every student can hear clearly. 9000 Series amplifiers and PC-580 ceiling speakers provide clear, reliable school-wide announcements. Larger spaces feature DA-Series amplifiers paired with HX-5 speakers for powerful, high-impact sound reinforcement. Finally, an M-864D digital stereo mixer allows flexible system control and fine audio adjustments as needed, supporting the school’s dynamic activities and community events.

The HX-5 is an innovative modular speaker design that incorporates the best characteristics of the traditional, cumbersome woofer enclosure combined with a CD horn-loaded high frequency driver and the full-range compact speaker enclosure without the drawbacks associated with each type. the HX-5 features remarkably easy to control coverage characteristics including problematic low frequencies and can be installed in a multitude of ways while maintaining a modern, unobtrusive appearance. a system is configured by four preassembled modules with four IF drivers and twelve HF dome tweeters. This configuration allows the variable directivity control and low-frequency dispersion control comparable to use a large constant directivity horn speaker. a choice of 4 directivity angles (15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees) can be employed as needed.

Assembled specifically for classroom use, TOA’s Infrared Wireless Classroom System includes a ceiling-mounted wide-dispersion speaker (with integrated receiver and amplifier), an easily accessed desktop tuner and a pair of lightweight IR wireless microphones, one each for the teacher and students. The system is tailored to classroom size, moreover, thus avoiding unnecessary equipment installation.
