Bill Bolton Arena has been a part of the Seaton Village community for nearly 50 years. Named for William (Bill) H. Bolton, a local police inspector. The arena has one ice rink, and at the time of installation the arena runs over 20 programs with over 2000 participants every year.

Purpose

The deep-rooted arena had held off change the communication system, but finally it had no choice. The overall audio system needed a total revamp and the arena added a paging system to increase communication to visitors and staff. The paging system was vital to make the arena experience more efficient and valuable.

Challenge

The challenge of this installation was the removal of the old equipment and running new more efficient wiring for the modern equipment. They required that audio reach all areas of the arena to ensure people heard message especially in case of emergency. This design would require a few different types of speakers and a lot of power to cover the large arena.

Solution

The choice was made to use the M-8080D matrix mixer as the head end, The DSP provide connectivity by IP and a direct connection to the remote microphone for paging. The M-8080D was connected to the powerful multi channel DA-500FH amplifier which in turn powered the various speakers from smaller lower powered wall mounted BS-678 to the larger and formidable H-X5 compact array speakers in the ice rink.

Feedback

Once installation began the excitement was palpable as the community was happy to receive a new audio and communication system in their arena. The sound quality and arena coverage was excellent and appreciated by management and those who utilized the arena regularly.

The HX-5 is an innovative modular speaker design that incorporates the best characteristics of the traditional, cumbersome woofer enclosure combined with a CD horn-loaded high frequency driver and the full-range compact speaker enclosure without the drawbacks associated with each type. the HX-5 features remarkably easy to control coverage characteristics including problematic low frequencies and can be installed in a multitude of ways while maintaining a modern, unobtrusive appearance. a system is configured by four preassembled modules with four IF drivers and twelve HF dome tweeters. This configuration allows the variable directivity control and low-frequency dispersion control comparable to use a large constant directivity horn speaker. a choice of 4 directivity angles (15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees) can be employed as needed.
