Using the AV-20D Beyond the Classroom

For those of you unfamiliar with the AV-20D, This  micro amplifier is more than meets the eye. One of the key applications for an amplifier like this is in the classroom environments but there are a few other ways that this amplifier can ease possible installations and help cut some costs.

Looking at a multi-zone system recently, I found that they had the need for a single ceiling speaker in a small area that was pretty remote from the other zones in the system. So the question came, how are we going to get sound to that area? While that’s not a difficult question to resolve with an amplifier in a rack and then running cable to that unit, because it was a zone unto itself we would have to take up rack space and add a more expensive unit to the system to accomplish this. However, using an AV-20D in bridged mode, we can just run the shielded twisted pair cable right to the unit which could be sitting above the ceiling directly next to one of the TOA F-Series Ceiling speakers set to an 8 ohm tap selection.

That might seem a little complex for a single speaker in some of these multi-zone systems, but it’s the concept to focus on. Think about a larger office building that might have several small conference rooms in need of an audio system. As opposed to designing an individual system for each room, you can centralize the mixer/DSP solution and then provide a local amplifier with a simple 10k ohm potentiometer for volume control in each room.
